A performance devoted to applied witchcraft
In an intimate setting, Viktoriya Myronyuk performs a series of physical and vocal exercises which have their roots in ancient Ukrainian rituals. Today, these practices, handed down from generation to generation, are often used to snag a European husband. In short, they are traditional love spells with an international field of application. Her subtle and ironic performance explores the matchmaking market from a woman’s perspective as well as the projections that emanate from it. The artist also deals with the “exotification” of everything non-European as well as the construct of “the other”. Do these incantations actually work? Do they, in fact, verbalise the lively imagination of those seeking to cross the border?
