Baladi ya wad

A multifaceted cabaret

Sequins, colour, grace and artistry: every move made by Alexandre Paulikevitch on stage is an expression of his all-consuming love of ‘baladi’, a popular form of dance first practised in Egypt but which quickly spread to cabarets across the Arab world. The Lebanese artist yearns for the return of feasts, dreams and beauty, now swept away by current events that continue to break both bodies and hearts. As singers and musicians perform famous and much-loved Arabic songs, the artist becomes a mesmerising diva, his undulating body hypnotising the audience. His performance also pointedly proves that this thousand-year-old tradition is not an exclusively female preserve but rather should be performed by artists who can make their emotions dance.

On 24.6. Alexandre Paulikevitch will give a baladi workshop.
