Duet for funicular
Lazy people hop on it in order to avoid the stairs. Environmentalists admire it for its pioneering energy efficiency. Tourists know it as the only historic monument of its kind in Europe. It is for the Fribourg funicular, with all its retro charm, that the New York based artists from Temporary Distortion invent a musical performance, ably assisted by local musicians. As the funi sets off, the accordion player in the upper car and a trumpet player in the lower car start to play. During the course of the journey, the two solo performances fuse into a duet that keeps time with the rhythm of the cable railway as it makes its way up and down the hill. The squeaks and rattles of the cars provide the perfect backing track. The performance elevates the short mundane hop between the lower and upper parts of the city into a piece of musical theatre packed full of surprises.
